Over the past 20 years, our team at Crossover Conferences & Events has collaborated with hundreds of Fortune 500 companies to forge strong, cohesive teams. We employ a unique strategy that intertwines offsite interactive team-building events with targeted in-house leadership training workshops. A key insight from our experiences is the significant role of introverts within any team dynamic.

As highlighted by Susan Cain in her influential book, Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking, introverts make up about one-third of any group. This statistic underlines an essential consideration for fostering effective team communication: ensuring every voice is heard, especially in environments where the more extroverted individuals might dominate the conversation.

Psychologist Carl Jung posited that we all exhibit a mix of introversion and extroversion, with the balance shifting based on the situation. It’s a common misconception that silence equates to a lack of contribution. However, failing to engage the quieter members of a team can lead to a loss of invaluable insights and perspectives.

Four Strategies to Empower Every Team Member:

For Extroverts: Challenge yourself to talk less and listen more in your next meeting. Take notes actively and observe others’ reactions. This mindful approach can unveil deeper understandings and subtleties within team interactions.

For Introverts: Consider jotting down your thoughts as if you were preparing to share them aloud. This practice might not only boost your confidence to speak up but also, when called upon, provides a well-organized repository of your insights to share.

Balancing Team Dynamics: Try dividing the team into two groups during brainstorming sessions: those who prefer to think and write quietly, and those who thrive on vocal brainstorming. Afterward, combine the ideas from both groups for a comprehensive discussion. This method ensures all voices contribute to the conversation, regardless of their preferred communication style.

Offsite Team Programs: Moving your team out of the regular office setting can reveal surprising aspects of team members’ personalities. For instance, a self-described introvert in our team emerged as a confident, enthusiastic participant during a karaoke session at one of our offsite events. Today, she leads as our Chief of Operations, exemplifying the untapped potential within quieter team members.

At Crossover Conferences & Events, we believe in creating spaces where every team member, regardless of their natural inclinations toward introversion or extroversion, can thrive and contribute meaningfully. Our team-building and leadership training programs are designed with this philosophy at heart, aiming to unlock the full potential of every individual for the collective success of the team.

Traditions mean a lot for us, at Crossover Events, as they help to build our strong corporate culture and values. One of these wonderful traditions is Friday’s breakfast. Every Friday, we meet in a Café to share a croissant, un bocadillo or un bikini together.

This little moment enables us to meet in another place than in the office and to talk about something else than work. We laugh, we eat good food and we exchange about our daily lives, chilling together before the end of the week around a cup of coffee for some or a cup of tea for others.

Working from home could have impacted this tradition but on the contrary, it forced us to reinvent it by organizing our traditional Friday’s breakfast via Zoom !

And you, do you have any tradition in your company you would like to share?

I am convinced that for a good DMC or event planner to be of real value to a client, a request for more information that we often receive in now mandatory.

We are seeing a welcome increase in the sharing of information on the What´s, Why´s, Where´s and How´s of the conferences or events that we organise. It has taken a long time for us to get there but I think that our credibility and accumulated industry knowledge has played a huge part in allowing us the confidence to ask those questions that unlock the matrix that makes up the event.

It is much easier to add value to an event when we know all the background knowledge and the planned ROI´s set by the stakeholders. Does this mean more work on our part as event planners? Absolutely it does, and we find this type of work immensely rewarding because it gives both sides a deeper appreciation of their respective roles. It also helps ferment deeper professional relationships.

Questions and more Questions

Every corporate event planner will tell you stories of the client request that asks for “some wow ideas” and the deadline is tomorrow, and just for good measure, they don’t really know the profile of the group or the budget. How realistic is it to work to a brief like this? I am hard pushed to find any other industry that would jump to work on such scant information. There are a few key elements in these requests that act as blockers to the process and without this information, one would literally be embarking on a wild goose chase. We find that a carefully thought through conversation with clearly defined objectives is a perfect antidote. Our team are well trained in being able to ask the right questions to ensure the framework of the proposal sits on solid foundations.

We say No to say Yes?

This has been one of the hardest lessons to learn over the years but defining our client profile and actively marketing to them has been a powerful tool for us. It has allowed us to recognise the type of requests that we know we can add value to and those that we cannot. There are now specific requests that we are not able to work on based on the information we have. In most cases, we have asked for additional information which ultimately has been helpful to both parties. In some cases, we have simply had to say no.

Carlota Pi, CEO and Co-Founder of Holaluz one of Spain´s fastest growing companies with a turnover of over 180million euros a month has been putting their trust in us to help them organise their corporate team building activities and conferences for several years, she says, “ We value the contribution that LifestyleDMC makes to our business, they are able to confidently work with us and give us ideas because they know our business very well”.

Part of the process

The place where every good DMC or event planner aims to be is at the table when the processes are being discussed. It requires a deep understanding of the company or associations with whom they work, to be invited into this process requires a level of trust that is not afforded freely. This trust must be earned through the ethos of the agency and transmitted by the team. At LifestyleDMC we have worked tirelessly over the last 15 years to ensure that our staff and clients understand the role that events and a good DMC have in the corporate landscape. As Sherrif Karramat, President of the PCMA says we try to make the world a better place one event at a time.

LifestyleDMC are specialists in organising events with measurable ROI´s, if you are considering holding a corporate event in Spain or Portugal contact us today for a consultation.

Find 5 good reasons … to be happy, to smile, to be positive, but above all, to share. 5 every day, let’s try it for 5 days and see what happens.

On March 16th we had just began our first day of lockdown, starting to work remotely, starting to isolate from colleagues and loved ones. And with all the uncertainties I came up with a weird idea; I would send an invitation for an experiment to the team via email. I would ask them one simple thing: Find 5 good reasons to be happy, to smile, to be positive, but above all, to share.

Before pressing the SEND button I hesitated a lot. I was not sure if the idea would resonate, if it would be seen as cheesy or awkward. We were teammates, we should be talking about work, about what to plan for the forthcoming weeks, about how to help our customers with the postponing of their events, about how to find solutions for them to keep engaging with their teams and customers … work, work and yes, work.

Work, yes, is what got us together at first, but with time, that liquid thing called time, we are more than just work colleagues, we are a group, we are a team, and of course, we are individuals. With our dreams, our needs, our struggles, our highs and lows, our passions, our commitments, our things to work further on, our routines, our goals, our families. With all this personal load and the vertigo of the days to come, I thought it would be important to connect with ourselves in the new reality we were all embracing and share the outcomes with the team. Finally, I closed my eyes with a mix of excitement and fear and pressed the SEND button. “Ok, done, let’s see what happens” I said to myself with uneasiness.

And what happened is… more than 300 good reasons to be happy, to smile, to be positive, shared by the team! The engagement was immediate. We all started to take some time every day, for 5 days, to stop our busy day, to pause, and to give our day a good long look to find those 5 silver linings that made up our day. It looked simple, but it was not. Some days were brighter and the 5 reasons came straightforward, and some others we all had to dig deep to find something to share. And we did it, we found our way to +300 good reasons! What a great team to be part of!

The 5 reasons challenge took 10 days, 5 more than intended. We were so into it that 5 days were not enough. Every day we were waiting for the new “5 good reasons” email in our inbox as the starting signal to share and connect, to feel we cared and to feel that someone’s got our back. We were thrilled to write our own 5 reasons and to read the reasons from the rest of the team. It felt like being invited to someone’s home. Having a privileged sneak peak to their souls, discovering what triggered their smiles and happiness.

And now, more than 3 months after that 16th of March, we have worked relentlessly hard. We have engaged ourselves with a multitude of conversations with our customers. We have launched our new virtual meeting site to help them engage with their remote teams and clients. We have joined many webinars, online meetings, workshops to keep improving our industry knowledge. We have successfully negotiated rescheduling postponed events. And we have used this unprecedented time to learn about ourselves and our teammates. Revisiting now the more than 300 good reasons we shared is giving us the opportunity to time travel. It is seeing ourselves in a past that is not that faraway but it feels extremely distant. Because we were different. We were different from the us that we are now. We have changed, grown and reframed ourselves. Reading them again brings a smile back and shines light on our more inner learnings. We will treasure forever this time capsule we built together.

What would be your 5 good reasons to smile, to be happy today? Here are mine…
